How to Switch to Clean Beauty on A Budget

Updated: Feb 2, 2022

If you’ve known me or followed me for some time, you know how much of a fan and advocate I am of clean products. And not even just beauty specifically, but also household cleaning products, our drinking water and the food we eat. And while it’s easy to go down a rabbit hole of why you should switch to safer products in your daily life, it’s important to understand why you should care. I have a previous blog post about my journey to switching to safer, so I encourage you to go check it out for some very eye-opening facts! But today I want to focus on just beauty & personal care products specifically.

I often get two complaints about this topic: it’s overwhelming and it’s expensive. Here’s where I come in to help. Today I want to list out a few of my favorite budget-friendly clean products, and help you tackle the feeling of overwhelm, or that you’re blowing your budget.

Most important: I am keeping all of these products at $50 and under. So let’s get started!

First things first – start SIMPLE. So often people assume that switching to safer has to be this huge, all-consuming, expensive overhaul. Not true at all. Start by picking out 1-3 personal care products you use every day. It could be the hand soap you use after going to the bathroom, the deodorant you put on before a workout, or the shampoo you use in the shower. Once you swap out a few products, then move on to a few more!

Be your own ingredient detective. My favorite free & easy resource to use to check ingredients is EWG. They are a third party, non-profit and non-partisan group that studies and rates products based on safety. For personal care products they have a safety scale of 1 through 10, 10 being the worst. They list every single ingredient in each product and make it VERY easy to understand. No science degree required. When looking through the ingredients, here are the main things to look out for: Aluminum, oxybenzone, parabens, BHT, synthetic “fragrance”, sodium sulfate and retinol. These are the main offenders that tend to show up in our products, and thankfully EWG does a great job of listing these out in products, and explaining why all of these are harmful to human health. To check out the EWG Skin Deep Database, click here! I encourage you to look up the products in their database and see what you find as far as safety.

Ways To Save: The world is getting very expensive. I get it. That’s why I really encourage you to find products that won’t break the bank, and that you can justify spending your hard earned dollars on. I hope this post helps you find a few products at a good price point, but I also encourage you to find other ways to save. A lot of my Beautycounter clients will stock up during our sales, which typically happen once in the summer, and then once on Black Friday. Beautycounter also offers 20% off for first time clients, and I know other brands and retailers also offer the same types of deals, so be sure to keep your eyes open! Another favorite way that I shop is by using payment methods like Afterpay or Klarna, where they break up your payment into 4 installments to make it easier to purchase. They are very safe and easy to use, all you need is a valid debit or credit card, and the rest of the payments are put on auto-pay. Whenever my Beautycounter clients are penny pinching, I always recommend that to them.

A Few of My Favorite Products: Here’s where we get to the fun part! My favorite every day products that are clean and budget-friendly. Listed below is each product, how much it’s priced at, and a link to shop it for yourself! Because I’m a consultant for Beautycounter, I know and love a lot of their products, but I also have a lot of non-Beautycounter faves as well! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, and just remember: keep it simple & don’t break the bank. Happy shopping!

Beautycounter Foundation: Beautycounter’s award winning foundation can NOT be matched! It goes on super smooth, it has skincare elements in the formula, and each bottle lasts me almost a year. They have 20 different shades so you can find the match that’s perfect for you! It sells for $45 each and can be bought by clicking here!

Megbabe Thigh Rescue: If you are a human with thighs, you need this product. It is designed to prevent thigh chafing, and let me be the first to tell you – IT WORKS. It is perfect for sweaty summer days, long days of wearing skirts/dresses/shorts, and all your future trips to the beach. This product is basically gold. It is listed at $14 and you can shop it here!

Babo Botanicals Mineral Sunscreen: Okay, so here’s a not-so-fun fact: a lot of sunscreens on the market are filled with junk and horrible ingredients. That’s why any time I find one that is clean and works well, I have to shout it to the world! This one goes on really well, doesn’t leave a white cast like other zinc sunscreens can, and is very gentle. I know technically it’s marketed for babies, but my husband and I both used it and really loved it! It’s priced at $16.99 and you can snag it here.

Beautycounter Counterstart Cleanser: If you are a fan of Cerave or Cetaphil, this cleanser is the perfect clean swap for you! It’s very gentle yet effective, and is great for all ages. The base ingredients are coconut oil & aloe I use it in the shower, and it grabs all my excess oil, dirt & makeup. Each bottle lasts me a long time, and the price point of $20 can’t be beat! Buy yours here.

EO Hand Sanitizer Spray: Since COVID made its appearance, this hand sanitizer spray has been my best friend. I am not a fan of regular sanitizer gel and hate that alcohol smell, so I love that this is a soothing lavender scent from an essential oil, rather than a harsh synthetic fragrance. The size is small enough to travel with and pop in your purse, too! You can grab a 2-pack for $13 by clicking here!

Native Deodorant: I know a lot of people are specific about their deodorant, and “natural” deodorant gets a bad reputation, but I swear by Native. They are aluminum free, paraben free, and have specific sticks that are baking soda free for extra sensitive pits. I will say that some of their scents have synthetic fragrances in them, so you have to double check on EWG, but this one that I use – Grapefruit & Bergamot – only uses essential oils. I get mine at Target for around $13, and you can click here to check them out!

Beautycounter Lid Glow Cream Shadow: After using this product, I may never go back to traditional powder eye shadows. I know a cream shadow might sound intimidating, but the applicator makes it fool-proof, and it sets almost immediately, so there is no smudging or running. It also has has ingredients like shea butter, cucumber, and coconut oil to prevent your lids from drying out. My love for these shadows are real! They sell for $24 each and can be shopped here!

Beautycounter Think Big Mascara: Please believe me when I tell you that this mascara is my newest obsession. Mascaras with a clean formula that also perform well are incredibly hard to find, but Beautycounter knocked it out of the park. This mascara is super volumizing and lengthening, but also is packed with tripeptides to condition and hydrate your lashes. I wouldn’t call this mascara waterproof, but I would call it sweat-proof! I could go on and on about this mascara, but just do yourself a favor and buy it. You won’t be mad. It is priced at $27 each, and you can shop it here!

Beautycounter Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick: These lipsticks are a cult favorite for a reason. They are the perfect “every day” lipstick, because the shades are not as pigmented as Beautycounter’s Color Intense Lipstick, and they are packed with vanilla, botanical waxes & jojoba esters that condition your lips, so it’s like a chapstick meets lipstick! I love all the different shades they have, and the magnetic packaging is great for making sure the top stays put. Definitely worth the purchase for $32. You can buy them here!

Beautycounter Makeup Wipes – I call these wipes the Magic Eraser for your face. I use them every time I need to remove my makeup, and they also act as a cleanser, so they are a two in one product! They are super gentle, and I never feel dried out or too greasy after using them. They are perfect for travel, too! These wipes are priced at $20 each, and can be found here!
