5 Coats for the Season

Updated: Feb 25, 2022

Is there anyone else out there who gets frustrated finding a good coat for the season? No? Just me?

Call me crazy, but I find it extremely overwhelming sometimes. As a plus-size woman, it can be quite the task to find something that checks all the boxes: stylish, warm, good quality, fits well and carries into the next year or two. Some years I feel like it can be slim pickings, and I always feel like Charlie and the golden ticket when I find a coat or jacket that I end up loving. To pass along the Good Coat Karma for anyone else who might be struggling to find something, I’ve reviewed my 5 favorites of the season! I outline what I love, what I don’t love, and where to buy. Happy shopping!

1. Daily Ritual teddy fleece zip up

What I love: This fleece is SO COZY! I love how comfortable and warm it is, and its thicker than you might think, so it’s great if you are going outside to get a walk or jog in. I included this jacket in my previous post about my favorite products through the pandemic, and I had to include it again because its just that good!

What I don’t love: The brand could be more inclusive with their sizing options. This fleece only goes up to a XXL, but I wish they extended it even further for more inclusion.

Where to buy: Can be found on Amazon here.

2. J.Crew Factory City Coat

What I love: The first thing that drew me to this coat was the color, a beautiful rich emerald. But don’t hate me when I tell you that I purchased this coat last year, and that color is no longer available. They do, however, have a lot of other great colors available! I also love this coat’s classic and polished style, and how it can elevate any outfit. The gold zipper is another great detail that I enjoy. It’s perfect for the holidays, and evenings out on the town!

What I don’t love: I wish there was a bit more definition at the waist of this coat. It’s a straight cut, and you can tell this coat was designed for people who are built the same way, but I love it enough that I don’t care! I also wish it was a teensy bit longer. It hits me on the tops of my thighs, but I would prefer something mid-thigh.

Where to buy: You can find it in JCrew Factory stores, or online here.

3. Michael Kors trench coat

What I love: I got this coat over four years ago, and it has truly stood the test of time. Every winter I look forward to bringing it out from the back of my closet. I love the classic trench coat style, with a beautiful camel wool. The belt is shown on the model with it worn belted, but I prefer to knot it at my waist. This coat provides a lot of warmth, and is perfect for a special occasion!

What I don’t love: To be honest, I can’t think of much I would want to change about this coat. Michael Kors has continued to make this coat for his Macy’s collection, because it clearly has proven to be a necessary staple for women.

Where to buy: You can purchase this in Macy’s stores, or online here.

4. Pilcro jean jacket

What I love: I was gifted this coat when I modeled for Anthropologie’s fall fashion show, back when I worked for them, and it is still one of my favorite items in my closet! Pilcro is Anthropologie’s house denim brand, and they make amazing quality products. This jacket is your quintessential jean jacket that cuts a smidge cropped at the waist, and has some give in the fabric. I love that it complements any outfit, and is perfect for all my friends living in warmer weather states. Be warned, this color in the plus sizes is currently out of stock, but they do have this jacket in a black denim, which I want to purchase next. They do, however, still have sizes in this color in petite and standard.

What I don’t love: This is another jacket that is hard to find something I don’t love about it. This jacket has also stood the test of time, and I will continue to wear it until the very end!

Where to buy: You can find the plus version of this jacket here. and the standard/petite version here.

5. J.Crew Factory puffer jacket

What I love: EVERYTHING! Lol, dramatic I know, but I really love this coat! I’ve never really been a puffer jacket kind of girl for fear that they are unflattering on my frame, but this one busted that myth. It’s roomy & comfortable, and has an extra lining at the wrists to keep your arms extra warm (a plus for Midwest residents like me!). I love the color, Frosted Olive, and the gold zipper detailing. So far the quality has been really great, too!

What I don’t love: It’s hard to find something about this coat I don’t love. One word of warning is that it gets warm inside the coat quite quickly, so sometimes when I’m walking through the grocery store I need to take it off for a bit. Other than that, nothing stands out.

Where to buy: You can find this coat at J.Crew Factory stores, or online here.
